Christmas is round the corner! Here’s a quick tutorial for some simple cornstarch dough ornaments you can make from home, be it to hang on your tree or to add a little personal touch to your gift wrapped presents.
Materials / Ingredients:
- Cornstarch / Corn Flour
- Baking Soda
- Cookie Cutters
- Straw / Awl
- Paint of your choice
Step 1. Mix 2 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of cornstarch in a pot.
Step 2. Add 1 and a quarter cup of water to the powder mixture. Mix it till it becomes runny and place it on a stove over medium heat.
Step 3. Stir the mixture constantly. Once it thickens, it’ll start to form a dough.
Step 4. Place it in a bowl covered with a damp paper towel and let it cool. Do not attempt to roll it out now as it’s extremely hot inside!
Step 5. Once cooled, knead the mixture till it’s smooth and roll it out. Keep it below half an inch thick or the ornaments will crack when dry.
Step 6. Prep your cookie cutters and have fun with them! Remember that you can always knead the remaining dough into a ball and roll it out again when you’re out of space on your current piece. If you’re using them as ornaments, use a straw or awl to create a hole out of the dough.
Step 7. At this stage, you can choose to let it air dry or bake it in an oven. It’s recommended to air dry for 24 hours but I left mine for about 2 days. The humidity in the air affects the drying process. Otherwise, you can bake them at 160 degrees celsius for 30 minutes on a baking sheet, but they do brown a little in the oven.
Step 8. Once dried, you can paint them using acrylic or spray paint. Use tapes to create different designs too!
Step 9. String your ornaments and they’re ready to go!
