DIY Tutorial: Feather & Chain Hairclips

October 30, 2011

A new pastime of mine is definitely “shopping for ideas”. I caught sight of a similar hairclip while accessory shopping that day and immediately thought that it was DIY-worthy and really easy to make. Here goes!

Materials needed:

  • Feathers
  • Jump Rings
  • End Clasps
  • Lightweight Chain
  • Hairpins/clips
  • Jewellery Pliers

normal feathers vs. quill feathers

First things first, I’ll like to point out that there are two variations to the feathers available in our local craft stores! You might find that some feathers are softer to the touch and more natural looking while the others look more structured and stiff. It’s really personal preference but I chose to use the softer and organic feathers!

1. Prepare a chain of a suitable length — You might want to use your hair length as a reference. I went with about 20cm. It might be useful at this point to mark out the gaps between where you want the feathers to be the total number of feathers you want to have.

2. Picking the best feathers, secure the end clasps to the shaft of the feather. These are available at craft stores at about SGD $1 for 12.

3. You should have “feather charms” that look like this after you’re done.

4. One by one, attach the feather charms onto the chain using jump rings.

5. It should look something like that after you’re done. Remember to attach the last feather to the very last chain link, but leave a gap at the top of the chain in preparation for the next step!

6. To complete, simply slide a hairpin through the top link of the chain and we’re done!

How easy was that? I can think of a thousand variations from this simple feather chain we’ve just made — replace the hairpin with a earhook and you have a glamourous cocktail earring. Or even just pin it behind your ear to give that illusion!

I pictured it to look really bohemian and to go really well with long hair (which both Ros and I unfortunately do not have at the moment, haha). Thus I got the very lovely Veron, my senior in school to model in a couple of photos.

Wear it like Veron! Pull it over and attach with another clip to create an entirely new look!

Or even braid it in!

Hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial! We’ll love to see your versions!

Hi Naddie! Thank you so much for your comment & of course we would share! I’m glad you’ve tried to look for the materials to begin on the project! Art friend (the one at Buona Vista) has a good mix of normal and quill feathers in various colours going for only about $2-4++. All the best!!!
